Date Pilot Comments
Oct 29 Sean T
Sean, with his newly discovered Jedi powers decided to try his first reverse launch: his first “few” tries were over powered by the “dark forces”, some may even suggest that a mystic ogre had something to do with it, but eventually it all came together nicely!
Oct 22 Dave MaClean

Movie Dave, although had some occasional minor gear sorting issues, managed a full day of great forward launches, some of his best ever; he also, successfully, got his wing to fly over the falls a few times and "offered" to be our wind dummy not once but twice. Well done!

Honourable mentions go to Sean for driving up to Bridal for our second flights.

Oct 8 Arthur
Art had some problems with his last B-line, and it's been a long time since he had a proper rematch. With just a little prompting this weekend, Art executed a perfect B-line stall. Also, Art set a new Deimos distance record for the longest controlled take off, (probably for than 500' and half a minute of running!). Moreover, Art and Karyn were the almost perfect hosts this weekend: letting the entire Deimos crew stay at their place, they entertain our little ladies, but we had a little problem when they cleaned our clocks in their favorite strategy game. Thanks again for another great weekend!
Oct 1 Sean T

On his first flight off Blanchard Mt., Sean manage to soar with a little help from Matt. At times it looked like he was even higher than Matt; not to mention Sean had both a good take off and landing. Honourable mentions to Ted for his help in driving and huge patience through out the day.

Sept 24 Arthur

All students would agree that, Art was certainly worth his weight in gold today.
Thanks Art for all your help.

Honorable mentions to Dion's new student, Shiriff’s, and her first three flights – not bad for 59 years old!

Sept 19 Sean T
Sean demonstrated some of the best student launches and flying I’ve scene all year! Great take off, flying and landings – not bad for just two flights!
Sept 5 Brian
Brian managed many firsts this weekend (full stall, longest XC), but the high light was his death spiral to 70 feet.
Aug 26 Sean T
Sean placed third in the BMBGC -Pretty amazing since he has not even taken his first high flight yet!
Aug 14 Trevor
Trevor wore his Deimos T-shirt proudly this Sunday - with four solid flights off Grouse. He had to waste his $25 air show tickets "but it was totally worth it" he said!
Aug 7 Malek

Malek won the pilot of the week award, impressing us married pilots, with his smooth performance with a local supermodel  (driving a $50,000 car) to be single and free!

His patience and bravery with be an interesting combination with he starts fly solo – probably next weekend.

Honourable mentions to Shane and Dave Merrick for their generous help at BM, and Movie Dave's first "Deimos" style take off at Woodside.

July 29 Samuel

Easily the best pilot of the day: two great launches and landings and managed to thermal up to about 3000', except for accidentally flying in the lee side of a few areas on the ridge, and turning a little to sharp at times, he managed the his wing quite well! Not bad for his 9th solo flight!

July 23 Samuel
Samuel kitted his wing for thirty seconds before launching (Deimos advance method) and then soared above launch for almost an hour!
July 17 Matt

A difficult decision this week: Trevor received his Novice rating, Diane had two near perfect flights (her first solos), Chris was super generous and helpful all week, and Racer Joe with his mega flights, but it was Matt who out did him self with his less than perfect landing demo with many solid new student landings.

Thanks Matt!

July 10 Harv

Harv managed to pick up where he left off a few months ago and was rewarded with some fine soaring flights this Saturday. His generosity seems to be limitless: even though he arrived a little late (on Sunday), he still was more than pleased to help drive most of the pilots up and down the hill.

Honourable mentions to Dave Merrick for being a wind dummy and LZ coach.

June 26 Trevor
Trevor finish all of his maneuvers and now just needs two more flights for his PG license!
June 19 Samuel

Samuel's launches are getting better and better: on his third flight he managed to extend his flight to almost half an hour and landed with just a little guidance (from me). Instructor Daniel said his launch was perfect!

June 12 Dave MaClean

Dave' s launches seem to be getting better and better, but he won the pilot of the day award when he decided not to launch at Woodside in strong conditions, then help me out by driving Matt back to White Rock (I' m still in the dog house but with a reduced sentence!).

June 4 Dave Merrick

Dave managed to fly to Harrison, while most of the other pilots were trapped in front of launch – good work! Good luck in the Canadian Nationals!

May 28 Samuel

Samuel has been training hard for the last few weekends, and his hard work just paid off, he just completed his first solo flight. According to Matt he did great on his approach but went a little too far behind the trees and needed to go on best glide to make the LZ. Honourable mentions to Movie Dave and Chris for setting their longest air times.

May 23 Brian

Brian set his personal best XC record at Whidbey, flying past the surfer's beach, then pulling off some amazing 5.10D (dirt) moves getting up the cliff face. Honorable mentions to Samuel for driving at Blanchard and his hard training at Whidbey.

May 7 Arthur
Art had more great reverse launches, while other more experience members wondered what was his secret launch technique, and watch the day drift away. Honourable mentions to Matt for guiding Art on his first XC.
May 1 Trevor

Hard to beat Trevor's three hour flight and smooth landings. Honorable mentions to Dave Merrick for help guiding; Murray for his mega help with driving; Movie Dave with his best take offs in months, and Kristen for her high speed driving.

Special thanks to Thom Mc for helping me with some tricky tandem launches.

April 23 Trevor

Trevor showed wisdom, skill and patients all weekend: in front of a small crowd, Trevor tried to kite his wing (with some success), but was most useful in helping to secure my passenger when we top landed. Even though other self tought pilots were flying, Trevor remained patient and waited until we could safely fly tandem. Avoiding peer pressure is always hard, but Trevor remained solid.

Honorable mentions go to Lee for continuing to train even though he had forgot to take a harness to the training field.

April 9 Dave Merrick

Dave was the wind "technician" for the morning flight, and managed a smooth top land (second ever) at lower Bridal. On his second flight he had to fight his way back to the take off from his lowest point ever (600'). Great work Dave!

Honourable mentions to Art for his dedicated training (BM) and getting to a new high point at Bridal (about a 1000' over launch).

Mar 12 Joe Payne

Joe continues to improve, and this weekend he finally received his novice rating! Congrats, he just needs a wing now. Hopefully he'll sign up in our new XLT course, so that his training (and adventures) will continue.

Honourable mentions go to Amine for rounding up two new students and putting on a great little acro show for the Bridal crowd.

Mar 6 Joe Payne
Joe knows the importance of a good launch; so he borrowed the Sigma 3 wing and spent the afternoon perfecting his take off. I hope he brings it back dry!
Feb 27 Arthur
More perfect take offs from Art (at Woodside and Bridal). Art is good at stalling his wing, but his recovery could be a lot better! Congrats on completing the Deimos Novice rating course!
Feb 20 Joe Payne
It was hard to pick this weeks pilots of the week (since there were no high flights), but over all, I think Joe showed the most improvement: except for a huge frontal at BM, the rest of his flights and kiting handling showed some great promise. Honourable mentions go to Art for his multiple flights and great high wind kiting demonstrations.
Feb 12 Arthur
Art managed another perfect and graceful launch at Blanchard, and his many unassisted high wind launches and landings at Whidbey (a first).  Solid stuff! He offered to drive us all down to Whidbey in his van, and for extra points he bought us all grapes and pops for the ride home. Honorable mentions to Shane and Dave for guiding and helping many pilots during their landings and take offs.
Feb 5 Joe Payne

Joe was easily the best Deimos student of the day. He tried for many hours to learn the reverse launch, but it was only in the last hour that things started to come together, which was a little too late to fly solo. He now has a demo wing to play with, so next time should be easier.

Jan 19
Arthur

Easily the best pilot of the week: conditions were tricky on take off, but Art's self practice at BM is paying off. All but his last launch was quite good, but his hearing was a little off on his first take off. With a little encouragement, he managed to go "over the falls" and control his first few deep spirals. He just needs to remember how to land a little closer to the center of the LZ.

I had LZ problems too: missing the LZ on occasion, but my excuse was a little better than Art's (of course, "Art's challenge was quite difficult").

Dec 18
Arthur
Easily the best pilot of the week. Manage to take off in the snow, in lee conditions, salom through some trees and perform a low J-turn landing.
Dec 5
Joe Payne
On his first of two reverse launches, he expertly kited the wing for almost a minute before actually launching. (If no other students were there to watch did it really happen)?
Nov 21
Lee
Lee managed to fly and land my tandem (with the help of Amine) - he would have hit the target but forgot to go hands up (when Amine told him to). In hope of doing his first solo flight on Sunday, Lee started training at 7am, but unfortunately the fog was too thick to fly Sumas. Honourable mentions to Matt for his help with the Sumas take off, and Amine for being the wind technician and ATC.
Nov 11
Steven
Steven' s dedication to practice is paying off with the best launch of the day. Honourable mentions to Dave Mclean for completing his longest PG hike ever, and Art for his great sherpa and ATC skills.
Nov 7
Steven
Steven managed a dozen near perfect forward and reverse launches, and some with no input at all! I think he wants a Whidbey rematch soon! Clearly the best student of the day.
Oct 31
Joe Payne
Joe did very well on his first solo reverse launch, had a great flight, and missed the landing target by only inches.
Honorable mentions to Dave Merrick for his "wing man" and LZ help, and Chris for his take off help.
